Update on our January and February Goals – Food and Fun!

January Goal

As you recall if you have been following my posts, I committed to monthly goals for 2018.  I decided that monthly goals as opposed to “New Year’s Resolutions” would be easier to manage and follow. January’s goal was to spend less, with the focus on food spending.

My Goal for January: Spend Less

The main focus was to spend much less on food.

We took the following steps to reach this goal:

  1. Set our goal (Spend much less on food)
  2. Made our plan (Use planning and creativity to spend less on food.)
  3. Put it into action. See my posts about  12 low cost breakfast options12 low cost lunch options , 12 low cost dinner options and 12 low cost dessert options.
  4. We made sure we were accountable by sharing our progress in the Weekly Updates: Announced our goal, plan and strategy, Week One update, Week Two update, Week Three update and then we wrapped it up here in this post.

Frugal Fun for Sweethearts!

(Not just for Valentine’s Day!)

My Goal for February: Frugal fun

The main focus is to spend much less on entertainment.

Why would anyone need to make a goal to have fun with their sweetheart? Every day life with all of its chaos and stresses creeps in and takes over.  Also, you may feel guilty because you have bills to pay, kids to shuffle from school to soccer practice, work deadlines or a few more tasks that have to get done.  “Once we get everything done, we can take a break and have some fun.”  That day may never come unless you actively put your intention into action and make it happen. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to remember how much you love and cherish each other but the ideas below are just everyday activities that can be enjoyed together all year long. February’s goal is to have fun!  I know it seems odd to have to make it a goal. We just wanted to remind ourselves that with all the stresses and chaos of everyday life we still need to squeeze in some fun.

My first post about fun focused on frugal family fun.  Most of those ideas were from my childhood or as a parent experiencing fun with our son. The next post had some frugal fun ideas for young adults. The ideas shared were things my son and his friends did in high school.  The last post covered fun at work.  Most if not all of these ideas were from my current 9 to 5 in an office but they could be adapted for most work place situations. What is next? Continue reading “Weekly Review – Valentine’s Day on a Budget”

Winter Break – Hands down, best time ever!

Having our son home from college has been a much needed pause for all of us.  I am fortunate to have a paid winter break from my employer and my husband is self employed so he was able to take some time off or re-arrange his workload around our family activities.

What a great week it has been (even though we didn’t get any snow).

Thank  you to those that shared some of their no cost/low cost holiday traditions.

As promised, here are some of mine!

When our son was little we made our own Christmas Card “picture” to send out to friends and family usually in front of the Christmas tree.  We would spend quite a bit of time picking a theme, getting ready and then take a ton of pictures.  We had fun choosing which one to use as our “Christmas Card picture” too! My husband’s birthday was last week.  How did we celebrate it?

A four day staycation at home with our three dogs, groceries and a selection of cheap wine. Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime. A seven mile hike, taco night, pastries at our favorite bakery (twice), and a brunch pick up party at the winery where we have a membership.

Okay which thing did not fit with the rest of the items listed above?

A SEVEN MILE HIKE! Continue reading “My Husband’s Birthday Weekend”
